Three Henrys, One Nursery
A small Carolina nursery with a long backstory: named for three generations, run by a landscape architect, and built around the rare natives the trade forgot.

The Name
Hank's is named for three generations of the same name. My grandfather went by Henry, my dad by Hank, and I go by John, but we're all Henry John Majdic. Naming the nursery for the middle of us keeps things less confusing, honors the two who came before me, and keeps the family name out front.
My grandfather and father were gardeners in their own ways: food growers who fished, hunted, picked blueberries, and spent their lives in the wild country of northeastern Pennsylvania. They're the reason I fell for plants and nature in the first place, long before I had the words for it. This nursery is a small thank-you to both of them.

Who's Growing It
I'm John, a landscape architect and an avid plantsman. On the design side of my work I'm constantly hunting down new native species and hyper-local plant communities to use in unexpected ways. The trouble is, the best of those plants are nearly impossible to buy.
So Hank's is how I fix that. The rarest of those plants (the ones nobody grows) we propagate ourselves from local-ecotype seed. The dependable native classics we bring in as healthy starts from trusted regional growers. Either way you get regionally-native plants you can actually get your hands on, chosen by someone who plants them for a living.
The Mission
Rare natives grown by us · dependable classics from regional growers
The hard-to-find species (the ones from the longleaf pine savanna, sandhills, coastal dunes, and piedmont that no production nursery bothers with) we grow ourselves from local-ecotype seed. The reliable native classics every garden wants, we source as strong starts from regional growers.
Every pack and plant you buy helps fund the growing and trialing of the next round of those uncommon natives. It's a slow, deliberate way to widen what's available in the trade, and to keep our region's rarer plants in cultivation.

Sister Company
Hank's is the sister nursery to Majdic Landscape Architects, my ecological landscape architecture studio. The two work hand in hand: the studio designs the gardens, and the nursery grows the plants that make them real. Our Native Plant Garden Packs started as a Majdic project and became the heart of Hank's.
